The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a federal program from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services covering GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight loss — a use Medicare drug plans haven't covered before. It runs now through December 2027 and is available nationwide to eligible members. Coverage is granted through your prescribing clinician, so the process starts with a visit — not paperwork. The program requires Medicare drug coverage — a Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage — plus one of the following: a BMI of 35 or higher; a BMI of 30 or higher along with a qualifying heart, blood pressure, or kidney condition; or a BMI of 27 or higher with pre-diabetes or a history of heart attack, stroke, or poor circulation. Already taking a GLP-1? Medicare looks at your health at the time you started — not today.

How Medicare Grants It

Authorization

Coverage is granted through a prior authorization that Medicare requires your prescribing clinician to submit — patients cannot apply on their own. One more rule worth knowing: if you have Type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or the liver condition MASH, Medicare covers GLP-1s through your regular Part D plan instead, and your clinician directs your coverage there.
